Sweat of Honey and Death Shall Have no Dominion
Hugo Calhim Cristóvão & Joana von Mayer Trindade
SYNOPSIS
The dance creation, Sweats of Honey and Death Shall Have no Dominion, takes place fifty years after the revolutionary moment of 25 April and treats dance as insubmission and the Dionysian revolution of Heterodoxy. In conjunction with Eduardo Lourenço's Heterodoxies, Pessoa's Heteronymy, Eudoro de Souza's Mythologies, the sensual poetry of Natália Correia, Luiza Neto Jorge, the new Dionysianism of A. O. Spare, the research of K. Kerenyi, Plato's Symposium, A. Silva's recovery of Diotima, Nonus' Dionysiac epic, censored in the constructed and recognised canons of the epic, and Nietzsche's Philosophy/Dance, which remains from the previous creation. Initially, the Dionysian intoxication of insubmission was honey, from caves where bees were said to sweat honey. Like humans when the heat turns their skin red and the "mania" sweeps them away from the collective drive to conform, manifesting itself as a dance of urgency in the amplexus, an urgent dance of a sexualised and multiform Dionysian entity, constantly mutating in its entrails, the revolt of the trees and the forest in silence, the transgression of convinced identities, the transgression of excluded third parties. A dance of irresolvable dialectics, a saturnalia in a resolution that is always yet to be, an uninterrupted dance of madmen, a dance of inversion of a socialisation restricted by codes and roles, orders and progressions. A dance of impulses that erupt in the movement of insubmission and spur creation towards a path of heteronomy, in the dance of madness.

NuIsIs ZoBoP is starting a cycle of four debates on 20 March at Espaço Agra in Porto, together with the Institute of Philosophy and Cristina Aguiar, centred on "Art/Heterodoxy/Transformation" under the stimulus of "dance as rebellion of the other in us". The aim is to fracture processes of conformity and expand the boundaries of the normalisation of the concept and practiceof art, stripped of merely discursive influences that constrain it towards orthodoxy and predictability and/or towards collaborationism in act with what oppresses us. Artistic phenomenon(s) are not encouraged as mere entertainment and luxury, dispensable or replaceable, but as an ethical force of vitality and lucid non-conformity that is critically necessary in a) the consistent agency that favours political transformation, b) the situated and local questioning of power and domination structures, c) the day-to-day undoing of easy normativities that perpetuate and replicate sameness and superficiality. We see this lucid and informed vitality as fundamental and basic to human growth, just as food, shelter and education are: essential practices for achieving autonomy and the courage to act with humanity. With this in mind, in the first debate we discussed three creative expressions that encourage an impulse towards Heterodoxy: the real and (im)possible architecture, theatre or so-called documentary theatricality problematising the fiction/non-fiction distinction, dance as a document and non-discursive memory of actions of revolt and humanisation.
