Escape to Present Time
The Light Power of the Moon Burns Only the Eyes

Synopsis:
The creation “Escape to Present Time - The Light Power of the Moon Burns Only the Eyes” envisions Dance as ethos and impermanence, a vertigo in the now, the finitude of precipitated beings, fragile presence, and the metamorphosis of the momentary—an attentive blade where The Knife Does Not Cut the Fire, yet fire tears through times of unrepeatable occurrences. It is a mythical experience of dancing with both delirium and ethical rigor, embodying an intimate feeling as a fact—centering the "fingerprint for eternity" against disappearance, as geopolitics bears witness by annihilating the present, enacting horror, and demanding responses of otherness that, artistically centered in the heart of Dance, de-banalize the present amidst the revulsion of the monstrous. This work confronts the conflict between Instant and Eternity, Permanence and Impermanence, Ethos-Pathos-Logos, through movements that occupy the instant, seeking relevance in the fragile present—a crucial path of resilience that disassembles identity across all (im)possible beings in the fragility of the now. It is a Flight to the Present, vibrating in eyes burned by the re-contemplation of suffering so that, from impermanence of action to impermanence of action, resilience does not lose its life in the fragile present.

Thematic debates

On 24 May 2025, at the Portuguese Centre of Photography in Porto, the cycle of THEMATIC INTERARTS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CONVERSATIONS, promoted by Nuisis Zobop, begins. In this inaugural session, featuring guest speakers Paulo Pimenta and Alípio Padilha, moderated by Hugo Calhim Cristóvão, the shared reflection on body, space, and artistic creation turns to photography — particularly social photography and performance/stage photography, understood as record, testimony, and creation. Photography will be approached as a language that not only documents but also interprets and re-signifies gestures, bodies, and social contexts. The discussion will explore how social photography contributes to the preservation of collective memory and the exposure of social vulnerabilities, while stage photography asserts itself as an aesthetic and dramaturgical extension of the performance itself. Between the fleeting instant of movement and the permanence of the image, the debate opens onto the communicative power of photography in constructing narratives, mediating between art and audience, and inscribing itself in history. This cycle aims to create a space for reflection and artistic experimentation, exploring the intersection of different languages and practices in pursuit of a dialogue between dance, philosophy, photography, and other forms of expression.

THEMATIC INTERARTS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CONVERSATIONS – Architecture 2/4
Next Saturday, 21 June, Nuisis Zobop — a cultural association dedicated to creation, research, and training in the field of performing arts — presents, at 3:00 PM in the auditorium of the Palacete Lopes Martins of the Marques da Silva Foundation, a performative moment built from its most recent creation: Escape to the Present Time – The Gentle Power of the Moon Only Burns the Eyes, directed, choreographed, dramaturged and conceived by Hugo Calhim Cristóvão & Joana von Mayer Trindade, with performance by Sara Miguelote. This performance will also serve as the starting point for the conversation that follows, at 4:00 PM, in the auditorium of the Casa-Atelier José Marques da Silva, featuring Cláudia Marisa (choreographer–professor–sociologist) and Hugo Monteiro (philosopher), moderated by Hugo Calhim Cristóvão (philosopher and choreographer) and Joana von Mayer Trindade (choreographer and psychologist). In this session, the shared reflection on body, space, and artistic creation expands into the field of architecture, questioning how built space influences — and is influenced by — artistic and social practices. Architecture will be considered as a singular territory for observing and questioning reality — not merely as a technical discipline but as a cultural and ethical practice that structures the ways we inhabit the world. The discussion will address the capacity of architecture to rewrite sociocultural narratives through design, materiality, and urban insertion. It will also evoke the memory inscribed in buildings and public spaces, as well as the role of architecture in preserving heritage and creating new possibilities for encounter. Between the scale of the design gesture and the dimension of collective space, the debate opens onto themes of sustainability, modes of inhabiting, and the impact of urban transformations on contemporary life. This cycle seeks to reflect on the fragility of what is currently at risk of disappearing: the bodies that inhabit the present, the buildings that hold memory, the landscapes that sustain us, and the ways of life that are undergoing change. The imminence of the (im)possible final gesture — whether choreographic, philosophical, or architectural — invites us to consider the role of architecture as a practice responsible for creating more attentive, humane, and shared spaces.

THEMATIC INTERARTS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY CONVERSATIONS – Psychology 4/4
On 22 November, the Nuisis Zobop Creation and Research Centre, at Espaço Agra, brings this year’s edition of the Interarts and Interdisciplinary Thematic Cycle to a close. This session, dedicated to Psychology, features contributions from Ana Coimbra Oliveira, Paulo Azevedo, Sónia Carvalho, Hugo Calhim Cristóvão, and Joana von Mayer, moderated by Cristina Aguiar. The fourth and final conversation of the cycle proposes a reflection on Psychology as a space of listening and analysis of human experience, marked by the fragility and impermanence of the present. Just as dance unfolds in the fleeting instant of the moving body, and philosophy interrogates what is transitory and unfinished in thought, Psychology confronts the mutability of the real: emotions that transform, bonds that are reconfigured, identities that shift. This impermanence manifests not only in the individual interior but also in social phenomena: communities in constant reconfiguration, cultural practices that emerge and fade, relations of power and solidarity that dissolve or reinvent themselves. Rather than interpreting fragility as a threat, the proposal is to recognise it as a condition for transformation. Just as in art, where the instant becomes material for creation, in social dynamics impermanence can also be a source of potential — opening pathways to new gestures, new encounters, and new ways of imagining the future. In the artistic world, this reflection inspires new directions shaped by the fragility of the moment and the irrevocability of change.
